Could Your Weight Gain Be Caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

Some women have a condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome. Ovaries are the organs in your body which store and release the eggs which dictate your monthly cycle and/or pregnancy. A woman will normally ovulate each month, producing an egg in either ovary, which is then released down the fallopian tubes into the uterus.

If a woman has polycystic ovary syndrome, her ovaries may be covered in cysts (follicles) and she is likely to suffer from hormonal imbalances. PCOS is a disorder that can often be spotted because of outward physical changes, for instance a sudden and dramatic weight gain.

If you’re concerned about polycystic ovary syndrome, it’s always best to speak to your doctor. Here is a list of symptoms which may indicate that you have PCOS.

Your Weight Gain Is Dramatic

Polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance. In a nutshell, this means that your body has difficulty burning glucose, and instead begins storing it as fat. This begins a vicious cycle, because the higher your weight goes, the more dramatic your PCOS symptoms become – and the more dramatic your PCOS, the more weight you will gain.

To that end, women who suddenly experience a drastic weight gain with no obvious explanation (such as a pregnancy) should always see their doctor immediately. PCOS is one possibility, but there are also some other dangerous conditions that may be behind this weight gain.

You’re Depressed

Any disorder involving your reproductive system is going to throw your hormones out of whack. Sometimes this can result in depression. Depression can be defined as a persistent sad or gloomy feeling that doesn’t go away even when you are doing things that used to make you happy.

Depression can come along with a whole host of symptoms including moodiness, irritability, insomnia, excessive sleepiness, increased or decreased appetite, listlessness, lack of motivation, and most seriously, suicidal ideation. Needless to say, depression requires immediate medical attention so don’t hesitate to visit your general practitioner, as he or she will be able to help you.

If your depression showed up around the same time as a dramatic weight gain, one distinct possibility is polycystic ovary syndrome. If you suspect that this may be the case, be sure to bring it up with your doctor.

You Have Other Physical Changes

If you notice sudden breakouts on your skin that coincide with other symptoms, this could be a sign of PCOS. Some women also begin to grow facial hair along their cheeks, chin, and upper lip. Some skin darkening may also occur in patches anywhere on your body. If you notice these changes, make sure you mention them to your doctor.

Stronger Hunger Signals

This is one of the reasons why it can be so difficult to lose weight when you are suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome. Your body’s hormones are completely out of balance, and one of the side effects may be that your brain begins sending hunger signals even when you do not necessarily need food.

If you’ve found yourself suddenly eating larger portions, snacking more frequently, or waking up in the middle of the night in response to hunger pains, this is definitely worth bringing up with your doctor. It’s much easier to control the symptoms in the early stages of polycystic ovary syndrome and reverse any weight gain which may have occurred. The longer you let this go, the more difficult it will be to back track.

The good news is there are a number of different treatments available for women suffering from PCOS. Some of these treatments may involve prescriptions, while others simply require lifestyle changes.

For many women, the most troubling aspect of this disorder is the sudden and seemingly unstoppable weight gain. Increased weight can lead to more medical problems down the line, so don’t delay in making an appointment to speak to a doctor. You can get on top of this situation, and get your life back to normal.
